Here’s another Taxonomy Fail for your edification and/or entertainment. I’m not sure who first mislabeled (or at least, mis-described) this image, but it pulls up on a number of blogs and sites with the erroneous story attached.
I present:
“Mantis Cannibalism Eating Mate”
…she’s eating a grasshopper. They *are* bother orthopteroids, but I don’t think it counts.
But in defense of the person who wrote this caption, the grasshopper is a male (still doesn’t qualify as cannibalism, though.)
That picture is captioned: “others bring a diversionary meal to distract their partner.”
Not actually a taxonomy fail.
Hey, Aaron. I actually took the caption straight from the alt-text for the image.
I do typically try to choose taxonomy fails from places that should know better, but this one I picked because the “fail” is perpetuated across a number of blogs and was prominent on a google image search. (Try a tin eye search if your interested… it’s kind of fun to track the picture’s history.)
Actually, this blog post is now perpetuating the confusion bit in the google image results… kind of a recurring problem I have when I share taxonomy fails. I do make a point to be clear in the file name and alt text.
Surely someone is required to make a joke about the Mantis’ having unusual preferences…
