T-wings

Cross shaped t-winged brown moth.

A plume moth in daylight resting spot.

I found this plume moth tucked under a leaf while waiting out the daylight.  Plume moths (family Pterophoridae) are one of my favorites of the ubiquitous “little brown moth” category.  They take their name from the narrow, lobed wings of most of their members which they roll up when at rest, giving them a distinctive “T” shape.  The lobes of the wings have a fringe of long setae (hairs) which increase the functional surface of the thin wings.
